CORE EMERGENCY ULTRASOUND COURSE FOR EMERGENCY MEDICINE AND ACCS TRAINEES
Overview
This comprehensive one-day course introduces the principles and practical applications of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in acute and emergency settings. Participants will gain the knowledge and confidence to perform focused ultrasound examinations and ultrasound-guided procedures safely under expert supervision.
The course aligns with the RCEM ultrasound curriculum and provides structured exposure to ultrasound physics, probe handling, and image interpretation. Teaching combines lectures, demonstrations, and extensive hands-on scanning with live models and simulation equipment.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the key elements of ultrasound physics relevant to point-of-care use.
 - Identify anatomical landmarks for detecting free fluid and effusions.
 - Perform focused ultrasound examinations and basic ultrasound-guided procedures safely and effectively.
 - Optimise image orientation and probe handling for consistent interpretation.
 - Integrate ultrasound findings into clinical decision-making and documentation.

Ultrasound Course Topics Covered
- Ultrasound Physics & Knobology: Frequency, depth, gain, attenuation, and echogenicity principles.
 - Probe Selection & Image Orientation: Linear, curvilinear, and phased array transducers; probe markers; longitudinal and transverse orientation.
 - Scanning Techniques: Probe stabilisation, gel use, and common movements (rock, slide, fan, rotate).
 - Recognition of Pathology:
- Pleural effusion and the jellyfish sign
 - Pericardial effusion and features of tamponade
 - Free abdominal fluid (FAST zones: RUQ, LUQ, pelvis)

 - Ultrasound-Guided Procedures:
- Paracentesis
 - Thoracentesis
 - Pericardiocentesis (advanced)

Who Should Attend
- ST1–ST3 Emergency Medicine trainees
 - ACCS doctors and urgent care clinicians
 - Junior doctors preparing for FRCEM/MRCEM examinations
 - NHS clinicians seeking structured, hands-on POCUS training

Course Format
